Are you a maker, a hacker, or someone who enjoys DIY projects and gadgets? Whether you are looking for a place to show off your skills, need an excuse and a goal to build some new ones or want to see other projects people have created, the Raspberry Pi Bake-off is an event for you.
The Locals is excited to be working together with UCA's Makerspace powered by the Conductor to bring the annual Raspberry Pi Bakeoff back to Conway!
What’s a Raspberry Pi?
Put the oven-mitts away, there’s no literal baking required for this one. The Raspberry Pi is an affordable, credit card sized, micro-computer designed to help people learn computer science. Since its launch in 2012, the single board computer has become tremendously popular and widely used by hobbyists and educators alike. With multiple models available the price of a Pi ranges from just $5 to about $35. With costs so low it is easy to see how these fully functional microcomputers have become incredibly popular for diverse projects. What’s a Raspberry Pi Bake-off?
It’s a chance to show off your project and have some fun with other makers. This event encourages makers to create a fun (and/or useful) project using a Raspberry Pi (or compatible single board computer) to display on the eve of Pi Day, March 13, 2018, at UCA's Makerspace on Donaghey, in Conway.
Judges and the crowd will pick their favorites and choose who gets the glory, the fame and prizes. If you are curious, but not up for making a project, you can just come support your favorite maker and check out what others made.
How do I participate?
Sign-up is free and open to all. Submit your project idea and answer a few questions so we’re ready for you. Please remember that projects will be on display in a relatively crowded room, with the lights on for an hour and a half on March 13. As such, we want to make sure projects are safe and do not require a dark environment. Sorry night-time dependent projects and flamethrowers - the Pi bake-off probably isn’t your place to shine. It is also a good idea to consider how you will show-off your project in action (e.g. if you did a media server you might want to make a visual aid to explain why it’s cool since being a media server isn’t very interesting to look at, or maybe yours is???).
Makers should plan to have their project ready on March 13. We will have a group work session to finish our projects, meet and greet each other and prep for the event one week prior (March 6th) at the UCA's Makerspace.
Not a maker? Come join us anyway! (Seeing the projects and chatting up makers will be lots of fun!)
You can come see what makers are doing with the Raspberry Pi, have some actual pie (the dessert kind), and check out the UCA Makerspace on Donaghey on March 13, 2018, from 6 pm - 7:30 pm. The event is free and open to all. UPDATE 2/16: Conway Scene has graciously sponsored a door prize. One lucky attendee (must RSVP and be present) will win a Pi Zero W starter kit! Come get inspired and you may just walk away with the parts you need to get your project started!
